Biobe’s view on the newly published DEFRA report for Water Management

DEFRA’s recently published ‘New Plan for Cleaner and more Plentiful Water’ is light on detail and a missed opportunity for the UK to lead the world in improving the health and well-being of our waterways, says Biobe Solutions CEO, Nick Irvine.

We urge the Government and DEFRA to quickly develop their new proposals to restrict PFASs (forever chemicals) in all forms not just in ‘wet wipes’ and textiles. We would recommend the creation of a ‘Chemical Strategy for Sustainability’ to support the proposals made, and in the wider ‘Net Zero Strategy – Build Back Greener’. We all deserve healthy rivers, lakes, coastal and groundwater.

The scientific community has highlighted the urgency of addressing all forms of pollution, and DEFRA’s plan lacked details to address emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, and industrial cleaning chemicals in our waters. Let’s not miss this opportunity to achieve a sea change in the way the UK manages water and for the UK to lead the way, not just on the decarbonisation of society but adding the aim of ZERO pollution in air, water, and soil.
